  8. ‘Creating balance is the most important thing’

    BBC Radio 5 Live

With the title almost secured, thoughts are already turning towards next season and whether Liverpool need to strengthen.

The Reds are believed to have dropped out of the race to sign Germany forward Timo Werner, who joined Chelsea earlier this month, but Barnes is not too concerned.

“Creating balance is most the important thing,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Bringing in a superstar player who is not going to get in ahead of Salah, Firmino and Mane, but he wants to be. Will that create disharmony in the group and upset the apple cart?

“Or would you rather bring in players like Minamino and have Origi and Shaqiri, who would probably put up with the fact they won’t play all the time, but the harmony is good and the group performs?

“So you have to get the balance right.

“We trust Jurgen Klopp enough to know. We didn’t make many signings last year but look at what they have done.”

  9. Liverpool youngster signs new deal

Some more Liverpool news – but it’s not about the title. Academy midfielder Liam Coyle, 20, has signed a new contract at Anfield.

  10. Sterling comparison ‘slightly wrong’

Raheem Sterling was “slightly wrong” in comparing the managerial roles afforded to former players of different races, says Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.

Manchester City’s Sterling called for more black managers in football while speaking about racism in the aftermath of the death of American George Floyd.

He compared the jobs given to Lampard and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard with those of Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole.

“I think in the actual case of managers, I think he got it, from my point of view, slightly wrong,” said Lampard.

Here is more from former Liverpool midfielder John Barnes, who bristles at suggestions Manchester City play the better football compared to Liverpool.

“Is better football being 23 points ahead of the team considered to play better football, or just more eye-catching to the purist?

“It also depends who you ask. You can ask Sam Allardyce what he thinks is good football and it will be different to what Pep Guardiola thinks.

“What you want is winning football and entertaining football and Liverpool and Man City both do that.

“Liverpool, even without the crowd, are an incredible team and it doesn’t surprise me because I know the way Jurgen Klopp trains the team and the way they play every single game.

“He puts pressure on the players to perform, to put in the effort and determination as well as the quality, and that’s what they showed last night.”

  13. Brighton defender departs

A bit of transfer news for you. Nigeria defender Leon Balogun has completed a permanent move from Brighton to Wigan. The 31-year-old joined the Latics on loan in January.

  17. ‘I’d rather win it as soon as possible’ – Barnes

news world news bbc news cnn news sport news

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Liverpool midfielder John Barnes says he wants Liverpool to win the Premier League as soon as possible, even if that means not doing it on the pitch.

If Manchester City beat Chelsea tonight then Liverpool can seal the title when the two sides meet at Etihad Stadium next week. But Barnes would rather City drop points so Liverpool go there with the title already secure.

“If you were definitely going to win the league in Manchester by beating City and we were guaranteed to do that I’d rather do that. But there is no guarantee of that,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast.

“But if we say ‘we want to win it at Man City’, go there and they beat us, then we haven’t won it at Man City.

“So I’d rather win it as soon as possible, which means Man City drop points.”
